Fashion comes and goes but history stays forever! The numerous fashion houses we see nowadays obviously come from the root of their story and hence made a house of luxury fashion.
One such fashion story is of the major haute couture brand and it's none other than Schiaparelli. So, hold your seats because today we are telling the tale of one of our favorite brands of all time.
If we are narrating any brand's history, we are going to start with when it was established and by whom. So, the house of Schiaparelli was founded in 1927 in Paris by Italian designer, Elsa Schiaparelli. She had an eccentric and unique vision of various fashion and luxury conglomerates such as haute couture, art, fragrance, jewelry, and ordinary things turned into quirky creativity.

In 1927, Elsa opened her own atelier in Paris. Earlier, her designs were more about knitting and knitwear focused. She was known for her surrealist fashion designs and accessories in the 30s. Her business started to grow over time, and by 1935, Schiaparelli was the leader of haute couture, expanding her fashion house into jewelry, perfume, cosmetics, lingerie, and swimsuits. In the mid-1930s, she collaborated with other artists such as Salvador Dalí, Jean Cocteau, and Leonor Fini.
Now, you will be shocked to hear that Elsa Schiaparelli was the first to adopt the concept of Shocking Pink in the early 1930s. Shocking Pink was Schiaparelli’s signature color. This led to other fashion houses follow the footsteps of Schiaparelli such as Adrian, Charles James, Balenciaga, Galanos and many other. (You could say that she practically invented the color).

During World War II, Elsa went to America to open her branch in the lands of United States in 1949 but after the war ended, the universe had other plans for this luxury fashion brand, leading it to shut down in 1954 due to post-war incompetence and the brand couldn’t keep up with the post-war atmosphere. In 1957, she launched a new company to sell her perfumes and the whole business was acquired by Italian businessman Diego Della Valle in 2007. He continued the legacy of Schiaparelli and therefore we can still see this brand in action today.

Soon, Diego hired Christian Lacroix (left) as creative director in 2013, who did not quite cut the mark for the brand. Later, the title of creative director was given to Marco Zanini (right) and that’s when the brand actually rose from the ashes. In 2014, the first collection was presented to the world after the revival of the brand under Zanini. Now, Schiaparelli was finally back on track with the help of designers.
In 2015, Bertrand Guyon (left) was made creative director of the brand after Zanini stepped down from the position. He showed his first collection to the world in July. Later, Guyon was succeeded by designer, Daniel Roseberry (right) in 2019. (He is still the creative director of Maison Schiaparelli).
Today, this couture house has become so big (just like its name). Everybody knows what Schiaparelli is in today’s date (if you don’t, then just read this whole blog). The journey of this haute couture brand is inspiring to many of us. Schiaparelli’s evolution of dresses from its unique and eccentric take to still being unique but ready-to-wear fashion has taken a modern turn in its journey.
Now, you must be dying to see some Schiaparelli dresses after the story right? Well, you must be already familiar with it but let us take the trip down memory lane again. Be it Jennifer Lopez’s sheer Met Gala dress from Doja Cat’s full red attire with 30,000 body crystals, we have seen it all and always be ready to see what more Schiaparelli has in store for us.
